The other night I was giving Silas his bath, a part of the usual nightly routine. His tub gets filled with water, toys, soap - plenty of activities to help him wind down while being cleaned. However, on this night Silas got fussy about midway through the bath, to which I attempted to resolve his fussiness. I tried to give him different toys, new toys even, I tried a new game, I tried warming the water, I tried it all and nothing solved his fussiness. By that time the look on his face was more frustrated than anger – he looked as he knew what he wanted but could not say it. We could not communicate to solve the issue.
So often I hear questions about our relationship with the Lord, questions like “how do I know he’s speaking” or “what should I even pray for”. And often this will result in a frustrating feeling, I mean who wouldn’t be frustrated by not knowing what their Lord and creator desires for them?
Here’s the thing though – he has communicated what he wants and his desires for us. Better yet he has not left us clueless on interpreting his communications either!
God has spoken what is a now a written word through his Bible. One of the biggest fallacies today is that God no longer speaks, his word is alive and active through the 66 books of the Bible. 2 Timothy 3:16 says “all scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for corrections, and for training in righteousness”. All scripture in the Bible was given to us by God, so that we would know what he has said for the purpose of knowing his desire for us. He trains us in righteousness so that we could live a godly life!
God has not hung us out to dry on communicating back either, one of the spiritual blessings of the Holy Spirit is that he intercedes for us! Paul writes in Romans 8:26 that “the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groaning too deep for words”. God knows that we are selfish, unholy beings who will ultimately fail in our prayers, but has gifted us the Spirit to guide us and even pray for us.
If you have felt distant, confused, or flat out lost on what God is “saying to you” – fear no more for he has spoken. I’d encourage you to change your thinking on the matter; dig into the word and see what he has said! Next, I’d say to pray what is on your heart, knowing that even if you fail to “pray properly”, the Holy Spirit is praying alongside you for you! That’s pretty sweet if you ask me. Church, I pray this week you would know that our God is a thoughtful, caring Father who has not hung us out to dry on our paths to righteousness and Christian living. Praise the Lord that he has spoken!
