A couple of months ago I wrote about sleep training Silas and how the start to that
journey was going, let’s just say it has been a long journey. However, we have gotten into a
consistent routine the last few weeks and it has been wonderful. Nights haven’t been this full of sleep in months! Last time as we had begun sleep training I reflected on how God the Father was disciplined yet patient with us and how we deeply needed this for our sanctification.
This week as I reflected on how sleep training was going, I realized how I still had a desire for more sleep, even after getting the most sleep I’ve had in months. Now that is just silly, what a greedy sinner I am, I’ve been blessed with real sleep and still desire more! And this is so often how we treat God grace to us throughout our road of sanctification.
We often ask, ask, and ask, never taking the time to slow down and appreciate the answered prayers and unexpected blessings he has provided in our lives. Our sinful hearts are wired this way. The Psalmist of Psalm 119 ask to be taught by God to “Incline [his] heart to
[Gods] testimonies, and not to selfish gain!”. Our hearts have a desire to always gain and never give – something often echoed in our prayers and asks of the Lord.
Yet, when we take a moment to slow down and appreciate what the Lord has done for us it brings a true sense of peace and fulfillment. David writes in Psalm 23 that his “cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” David wrote this is in a time of reflection, possibly amid his trials with enemies and sin, yet he is at total peace looking upon the blessings of God on his life.
When we take a moment to slow down and not ask the Lord for more but rather look at what he has done, we can see the Lord’s hand and his control and guidance of our lives. To me nothing is more peaceful or easing than that during times of need or desire. As I reflected
upon sleep training, I realized that the Lord had begun to bless our house with sleep once again, and that always whining or looking for more made me miss the blessing he had bestowed upon us.
This week I encourage you to look back upon your prayers and take some time to
reflect on how those were answered. Give thanks to the Lord where he has had his hand in your life. I pray that FBC Panhandle would not take for granted the blessings God has provided ourselves and our Church but rather give thanks!
