Sleep Training

We have been sleeping training the baby for about a month now, which has been very up and down. Sleep training Silas has been one the biggest challenges for Kenzie and I as new parents (no shock there). Some nights go great; he’ll sleep in 4-5 hour stretches – giving you hope for the sleep filled nights to come – other nights he will not sleep at all.
This weekend we began taking a stronger approach to the cry it out method, and it has worked wonders so far. He has been getting to sleep in about 5-15 minutes on his own and been able to put himself to mostly put himself asleep. The caveat has been keeping to a strict routine pre-bedtime and for us to push through his weary cries.
As I walked out the door this morning, Silas had just gotten himself calm and asleep for a nap, his first time on his own during the day. Kenzie and I shared a big smile on my way out, we could both see some sleep in our future (hopefully!).
As I reflected on this, I realized I am learning two things as a father – patience and discipline. The patience to endure the cries and the discipline to not walk into his room and soothe him.
The Lord our Father, sets the example for us to have patience and discipline with us. He is patient as we walk our road of sanctification with Christ and disciplined as an unmoved object (Exodus 34:6-8).
We are like Silas to him, the crying baby who wants rocking and shushing to sleep. We want him to make our lives comfortable, easing our troubles away. Yet often he will not “rock us to sleep”, rather he will guide us through the troubles and trials of this life.
Isaiah 41:10 – “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
We can look to the Lord in our sin, hard times, middling times, or great times knowing that he is with us having a full patience to endure our non-sense. Fear not the Lord is not looking to rock you to sleep but to uphold you with his righteous hand, bringing you near him.
