Relationship, Routine, & Repetition

A couple of weeks ago we took Silas to the Little Gym in Amarillo, which is what it sounds like, a small gym for toddlers and younger. It’s a cool place that Silas loves and really gets to moving! I often do not get to go, but one of the sessions fell on my off day. The day I went they had another baby-based business there to advertise their singing and speech program. The lady presenting explained that their program focused on three aspects – relationship, routine, and repetition. She pointed out that your baby learns best from their parents and people they trust, in a consistent routine, and with repetition overtime. I head this and thought “this is an awesome way to look at encountering the Lord”!
Relationship – may be the most overused word by American Christians, but for good reason. In Genesis 1:26 we see the Lord make man and give him specific authority and task to glorify God, which were ways for the Lord to have relationship with man. He created us to seek and glorify him. We should be seeking a relationship with him not for our gain, desires, or emotions but rather to glorify him.
Routine – is something that we all have, disciplined or not. Each of us have daily do’s and don'ts, even those who go with the flow, have a flow. Making the Lord a priority in this routine is essential – Psalm 1:1 says, “blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked... but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law, he meditates day and night.”
Repetition – can often be confused with routine. Repetition however is to continuously repeat something, regardless of if it’s in your usual routine or not. Repetition should be a part of your routine, especially repetition with the Lord. This could be memorizing verses, repeating prayers, or even repeated quiet time. Psalm 136 tells us to “give thanks to the Lord of lords, for his steadfast love endures forever”. God is repetitious and wants the same for us.
Relationship, routine, and repetition are vital to encountering our Lord and Savior. A healthy relationship based on good routine rooted in repetition will lead help you draw near to the Lord. I encourage you this week to look at these three areas, and ask “where are you lacking?” I pray that the Lord would be kind and gracious towards you as you seek him.
